Short Intro. Hi there! My name is Joshua Altamirano. I am an aspiring marketing professional, currently working on expanding my skill set and knowledge of the digital marketing industry.
Where Have I Been? I graduated from Baruch College with a Bachelor's of Business Administration in Marketing Management. While I was enrolled full-time at Baruch, I worked part-time as a medical billing assistant and participated in student activities including serving as President of Baruch G.L.A.S.S. (an undergraduate LGBTQ student organization) as well as hosting a radio talk show on Baruch's WBMB radio.
Where Am I Now? I currently work as an academic tutor and operations manager at Kairos Learning Community. I am also a digital marketing apprentice at CO*OP, a non-profit digital marketing professional community where I am learning all the latest knowledge in Excel, HTML/CSS, Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing and Paid Social.
Where Am I Going? My goal is to use my skills and vast experiences to lead a successful career in marketing where I can help small-to-medium sized businesses thrive in cluttered market.
- I can develop creative solutions.
- I can effectively lead a team.
- I can think analytically.
1 Learning Target
I want to master digital marketing skills, like SEO, SEM and paid social to better understand the marketing industry.
2 Companies I really admire and Why
Google is definitely a leader in the tech industry. I am both amazed and inspired by their work; they have effectively managed to develop innovative products and services that help our everyday lives. From their search engine, to office tools, mobile technology to operating systems Google continues to answer the questions of the future.
McCann has long been a trailblazer in the marketing industry. I admire their continuing innovation in developing winning marketing strategies. As an aspiring marketer, I find their creativity inspiring.
(Fun fact: McCann-Erickson was the inspiration/basis for the fictional advertising agency Sterling Cooper on the hit show Mad Men)
Let me tell you about ...
Setting the stage. Three years ago, during my sophomore year at Baruch, I joined the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Society (G.L.A.S.S)
The beginning. At the time, the 36 year old organization had trouble with acquiring new members and retaining active members. I quickly realized what an important resource this organization was for the hundreds of LGBTQIA identified people on campus as well as those who were not as educated on the community. I wanted to ensure this organization would be around for years to come.
The middle. I decided to run for Vice President of Marketing, an executive board position that would help me make some changes. Together with the rest of the executive board, I worked on a restructuring strategy to that focused on incorporating LGBTQIA community education into events that interested the general Baruch student community, like networking and career panels, legal panels and a few great social events. I eventually was elected President, and during my term I led a re-branding effort that helped solve a longstanding controversy with the name that seemed to exclude the entire community. Thus I led a campaign to rename the organization the Gender, Love and Sexuality Spectrum (G.L.A.S.S.).
The End. During my time with the organization, we saw an increase in active membership (nearly triple the number of members when I joined), as well as an increased awareness of the organization and it's goals. We even managed to gain some recognition from the student government and university administration in the form of awards and grants.
Reflection. That experience in leading a group and actually being able to see the organization change before my eyes showed me the importance of hard work and effective strategies.
