2 Companies I really admire and Why
I have been a Marvel fan since I was a young boy in Ecuador. Of course at that age I didn't know it was called Marvel; to me it was all superheroes. They have also done a great job keeping updated and using the digital world to their advantage. They are moving from paper to digital which keeps the regular me and professional me interested.
Who doesn't love Netflix? They are an example of what can happen in the business world thanks to digital. When the appeared they were the underdog who took a chance and ended up beating Blockbuster who was the leader in the market during 2004. Plus they provide quality entertainment.
Let me tell you about ...
Setting the stage. While I was working as an academic peer mentor for Guttman CC I was thrown into a new role. There was a shortage of Leadership mentors, and they are the ones who co-facilitate freshman seminar with college advisors that is called Labss. As an academic mentor I was used to being in the class of the subject I was assigned to, but not used to presenting and being in front of the class. My in class interaction with students was low as an academic mentor but as a leadership mentor it spiked to 100%.
The beginning. I was never in a position like this where I would be in front of a class weekly. Also this was so unexpected and sudden that I didn't know what to do or what I should do. Being able to speak up and actually talk with students during class was a challenge.
The middle. What actions did you take? Why did you make those decisions? Be specific!
The End. After that semester I became a leadership mentor and was part of two Labss during the semester. I am able to talk with students on a more personal level and dig deeper into how I can help them.
Reflection. After being part of two Labss classes I learned that the classes as a whole were different. In order to optimize the time and help I could offer them I had to pay attention and asked for feedback to better help them. Both classes had their own personalities and I had to adapt to each to help them. For one class being more serious and professional worked, but for the other I had to be more laid back and go to a more personal professional level.
