Short Intro.  Hello! My name is Sarah Roman and I'm interested in Digital Marketing with a focus in User Experience (UX) Design. I'm skilled in Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator etc.), and HTML/CSS. My favorite food is pizza and my favorite video game is The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Where Have I Been? I graduated from The City College of New York in Spring 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in Digital Design. When I wasn't working with children at summer camp, I brushed up on my skills in the Adobe Creative Suite, HTML and CSS, while learning new skills along the way.

Where Am I Now? I am a Digital Marketing and UX apprentice at COOP, learning new skills including Excel, Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing and Paid Social; I joined COOP because I felt that Digital Design and Digital Marketing go hand-in-hand and there are opportunities to put my known skills to the test while acquiring new ones. When I'm not at COOP, I am a group leader at the YM and YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood.

Where Am I Going? My goal is to use the skills I have developed through my experiences at COOP and outside to pursue my focus in UX Design.

2 Companies I really admire and Why

Nintendo is, arguably, one of the greatest video game companies of all time because of the overall influence it has on gamers and non-gamers. Not one video game was the same; they immersed the player in a different world and encouraged them to accomplish a number of set goals through a detailed story, eye-catching graphics and simple gameplay. Recently, Nintendo branched its services out from video game consoles to smartphones as a way to attract a different audience from their own and to push development on mobile devices. Nintendo was one of the many companies that motivated me to get into the design field through its video games.

Twitch is an online live streaming platform where broadcasters can release and perform their content in real-time with viewer interaction live. I first found out of Twitch several years ago when I wanted to find a hobby that doesn't involve being the viewer but a content creator. Now as a live broadcaster, I consider Twitch as my second hobby, influencing many individuals around the world with my creative content and entertainment.

Toy Story was one of the first movies I saw in theaters. I was blown away by the story, characters and the animation. It was my first experience watching a Pixar movie. Years later, after filling my brain with Toy Story's sequel and many other Pixar movies, I saw Toy Story 3. While it still kept most of the same characters, the story and the animation were better than before and I immediately felt like a kid again. Like Nintendo, there wasn't a story that was the same. Each movie had an equal portion of a compelling adventure and crisp, clean animation that sucked the viewer right in. Pixar, as a company, entertains people of all ages.

Let me tell you about ...the time I lead an art activity!

Setting the stage. It was a Friday afternoon at the Be Me: Afterschool Program and my supervisor told me to take charge of an art activity for half an hour.

The beginning. The children had the choice of doing art, playing sports or playing board games. My supervisor thought I was a great fit for the role because I excelled in art. The challenge was how to get them engaged in an art activity.

The middle. Last week, the prompt of the art activity was to color in mandalas. I wanted to do something different. I printed out a bunch of empty comic pages beforehand and created a prompt of making a short comic. Having a bit of knowledge in the field, I gave them ideas and examples of different genres of comics and superheroes. I made this decision because I enjoyed making comic books in second and third grade and I wanted to see what would kids in this generation can come up.

The End. In the end, the kids enjoyed making comics and shared them with their friends. They reacted positively and wanted to continue the activity next Friday. My supervisor also reacted positively and also wanted me to continue the activity from now on.

Reflection. I learned how to turn an ordinary idea into something out of the box and engaging to a children's audience. It can be applied to UX design where there isn't a singular way to find out the outcome of a problem and that there are multiple ways and ideas to solve and complete a challenge.
